Springhead Nurseries has been a family run business for over four generations. The nurseries are today owned by Mrs Elliot and her son Neil. Established in 1898 by Walter John Elliot, Mrs Elliot’s late husband Dudley’s grandfather. It has seen many changes since being one of the first watercress growers selling to the public in the UK.
Springhead Nurseries was a popular Sunday outing in the early 1900s for ladies and gentlemen, dressed in their Sunday best, to visit the gardens, take tea in the tea house and buy watercress.
Watercress was grown at Springhead until 1933 when the beds dried up due to a nearby cement factory using water from the underground springs.
In 1930 the first glass house was erected and each generation has developed and grown the business to what we see today.
The nursery is now open all year round offering seasonal plants, baskets and tubs, shrubs and trees, pots, composts, soils and bark.
At the heart of the business is a love of growing plants and offering the community a good source of affordable plants for the garden.
We pride ourselves on great customer service, quality plants and value for money.
As seasonal growers we stock plants and shrubs throughout the year relevant to Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter with the majority of the plants grown on site. From May we stock a very wide selection of annual bedding and at Christmas time we sell cut and pot grown trees.
We look forward to welcoming you at Springhead Nurseries, Watling Street, Gravesend, Kent, DA11 8AA.
