Istead United Colts FC has once again selected the Elliott Holmes Memorial Fund (EHMF) as their Charity of the Year, strengthening their commitment to supporting youth mental health in Gravesham. This partnership tackles the mental health challenges young people face—from academic pressures to personal struggles—and ensures they feel valued and supported. With 1 in 5 young people now experiencing a probable mental health disorder, this is one of the biggest health, social and economic challenges of our time.
About EHMF
Since 2022, EHMF has provided vital mental health counselling to 345 young people in Gravesham with a “no-barriers” approach. A staggering 44% of young people who seek help with EHMF have struggled for over two years without accessing support. EHMF offers a safe, confidential space for young people experiencing a variety of issues, some of which they cannot share with family or friends, to self-refer without the usual barriers associated with accessing help through the NHS. They collaborate with local schools, Darent Valley Hospital, Kent Police, leisure centres and community groups to provide timely support. The fund was named after 19-year-old Elliott Holmes from Istead Rise, he struggled for 8 years with his mental health and eventually took his own life after failing to access the support he needed. A bench funded by Elliott’s friends, sits in the far corner of community field in his name and is a constant reminder why we have to unite as a community to ensure support is available for young people to access.

With 11 teams and a focus on positive values (#weonlydopositive), Istead United Colts has been a cornerstone of the Istead Rise community for over 40 years. The club emphasises both physical and mental well-being, with fully qualified coaches and over 170 members. They’re always seeking volunteers to help grow the club. The Importance of Mental Health in Sports as more athletes speak out about their mental health struggles, this partnership sends a strong message: mental well-being is as important as physical health. It encourages young players to prioritise their mental health and seek support when needed.
